Giza (1 of 2)

Despite centuries of study, the Pyramids remain a mystery. There's their age: we are closer in time to the era of Jesus Christ than he was to the Pyramids. There's their size: for 4,000 years the Great Pyramid remained the tallest manmade structure ever built. There's the how: the Pyramids are precisely placed, their sides aligning to true north with only 3/60th a degree of error, while certain internal air shafts line up perfectly with celestial constellations.

Their extraordinary shape, impeccable geometry and sheer bulk are a moot question: 'How were we built, and why?' Many people believe such awesome structures could only have unearthly origins. It was neither an obsession with death, nor a fear of it, that led the ancient Egyptians to build such incredible mausoleums as the pyramids. Rather it was their belief in eternal life and their desire to be at one with the cosmos.
