It is sometimes said that Palawan's Tubbataha Reef is so ecologically important that if it dies the Philippines will also die. Hyperbole perhaps, but it contains an element of truth: the reef is among the richest fishing grounds in Asia and its health is crucial to the health of the nation's marine environment and food supply.
